ARC organized a series of activities and events at Baa Atoll Goidhoo to celebrate this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, in partnership with UNICEF Maldives.
To mark the occasion, 17 selected stories of inspirational girls across the nation were featured in the “Resilient & Relentless: Her Story” Exhibition inaugurated by the First Lady of Maldives H.E. Fazna Ahmed. She also launched a child-friendly video on the Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women, at the event.
The celebrations continued with the ‘Girls on the Go’ Camp held from 10-12 October in Goidhoo, which included a Discovery Dive, Skating, Swimming, Surfing and Paddle Boarding lessons as well as Yoga and Zumba classes, for girls of different age groups from the islands of Goidhoo, Thulhaadhoo, Fehendhoo and Eydhafushi. The girls were guided and inspired by professional female instructors from these fields, who also provided a Career-Guidance Talk.
ARC also held a Girl Empowerment Workshop in partnership with Family Protection Authority and Family Legal Clinic. The workshop included awareness sessions on issues ranging from violence and harassment, financial independence, healthy relationships, as well as setting goals and aspirations.
During the trip to Baa Atoll, awareness sessions were also held for women and men on domestic violence and family law, and the important role of fathers in the upbringing of girls.
ARC expresses since appreciation to Baa Goidhoo Council and School, Island Aviation, and the different organisations, business and individuals for their support and assistance. ARC also thanks all participants for their active participation and contributions. With the support of our partners, ARC hopes to conduct similar activities and programmes to empower girls across different atolls of the country.
