ARC joins International Coalition for Child Rights Protocol

Date: 17 June 2013

Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC) has joined an International Coalition Ratify OP3 CRC which supports the ratification and early entry into force of the Third Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a communications procedure (OP3 CRC).

The Optional Protocol on a Communications Procedure establishes an individual complaint mechanism designed to allow children, groups of children or their representatives, who claim that their rights have been violated, to bring an individual complaint before the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. What is more significant is that it allows children to approach the UN if their rights are not being protected by the State and all domestic remedies to seek justice have been exhausted.

The International Coalition (ratifyop3crc.org) is a group of around 50 NGOs from all regions of the world advocating, promoting and protecting the rights of children, and urging their respective national governments for the ratification of the Optional Protocol. The Maldives signed the Optional Protocol on 28 February 2012, but is yet to ratify it.

ARC once again takes this opportunity to urge the Government of Maldives to standby its previous commitments made and move ahead with the ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a communications procedure at the earliest possible opportunity.
